GREEN COVE MAY HALT TAX ON SOME HOME HEATING FUELS

Consumers of propane and heating oil get no city services in return.

City Councilman John Buchanan wants City Hall to give some Green Cove Springs residents a gift in the new year.

If his wish is granted, residents will no longer have to pay a city tax to purchase propane gas or heating oil for their homes.

"We're collecting the tax, but we're not producing anything. We don't do anything for customers who have gas," he said at a recent council meeting. "It's taxation without representation."

Revenues from the tax do not make up a large part of the city budget - $8,000 to $10,000, said city Finance Director Sue Heath.

But having it back might mean a great deal to some cash-strapped residents, Buchanan said.
