Full Description:

Coast Guard Auxiliary is proud to announce the Flag dedication of the new Green Cove Springs detachment of Jacksonville Flotilla 14-08 on Saturday June 27, 2009 at 10:00 am. It will be located at Reynolds Park Yacht Club, 1063 Bulkhead Road, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043. The general public is invited to see what we have to offer. We meet the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm.

Flotilla 14-8, of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, belongs to the uniformed civilian volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard. The flotilla is in search of volunteers interested in serving their country and community in the area from downtown Jacksonville, Florida south to Federal Point near Palatka on the St. Johns River in Northeast Florida. The Auxiliary is an integral part of Team Coast Guard, performing all Coast Guard missions authorized by Congress, with the exception of direct law enforcement and military action. We conduct safety patrols on local waterways, assist the Coast Guard with homeland security duties and environmental monitoring, teach boating safety classes, and conduct free vessel safety checks for the public, as well as many other activities. Training opportunities include skills in small boat operations, radio communications, vessel examination, and instruction. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, age 17 or older and pass a basic background check. It is desirable, but not mandatory, that applicants have ownership in a boat, aircraft, or private radio facilities or related special skills. There are no upper age limits or height/weight standards although those choosing to become boat crewmembers must be able to perform certain tasks. Both Vessel Examiners and Boat Crewmembers must be comfortable on a moving vessel. Applicants are expected to volunteer their time and talent, purchase regulation uniforms and some safety equipment, provide their own transportation and pay small annual dues. For more information send an email to gcs-detachment_14-08@comcast.net with your full name and address and the best way to contact you (phone, email, etc.). A representative from the unit will contact you as soon as possible.
